Come one, come all! Once again it is time for the Honokaa Hongwanji’s Annual Garage and Food Sale on Sunday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Honokaa Hongwanji. See and buy lots and lots of wondrous treasures from Honokaa community families. You name it, they’ll have it, all at affordable prices. Additionally, there will be a silent auction featuring a variety of wonderful items. Check out the food sale, with delicious baked goods, snacks, rice products, jams, jellies and pickles. The Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua Disaster Drill needs 30 volunteers on Monday, June 24, at 8:30 a.m. Participants should come prepared to get wet (surf shorts, slippers) and bring a change of clothes. The hospital will be simulating a decontamination of a release of ammonia from a local power plant.
Participants in the mock disaster will be brought to the hospital by EMS staff, then go through the decontamination showers. Please call volunteer services coordinator Stephanie Peikert at 932-4153 or email speikert@hhsc.org if you are interested.

Book sale: Please come by the North Hawaii Education and Research Center (NHERC) to help support scholarships for North Hawaii students. Books start at 25 cents each or 10 for $1.50. Sale is for the entire month of June. Coordinators have romance, history, literature, science and tech, do-it-yourself and much much more. All proceeds will go to the NHERC Scholarship Fund. Drop by NHERC, below the hospital, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., now through June 30.

The Third Thursday Thrive is this Thursday, June 20, from 6-8 p.m., and every third Thursday of the month thereafter. This grassroots community group gathering is at NHERC. It is a community potluck to support sustainability as well as expand connections within the Hamakua community.

July 12 is the deadline to register for the fall 2013 college classes in Waimea. Full tuition-waiver scholarships are available to help cover expenses associated with registering for the courses: “Hawaiian Studies 100: Piko Hawaii” and “Speech 151: Speech & Communication.” The scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Students must be accepted into Hawaii Community College or be a continuing student at the University of Hawaii at Hilo for the fall semester. These classes will be held in Waimea at Kanu o ka Aina. Kokolulu Farm & Cancer Retreat will present “Onking Around Hawi” Sunday, June 30, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Kokolulu Farm, 55-3476 Akoni Pule Highway. This is an open house featuring Grand Master Riley Lee, shakuhachi flutist, honoring Fred Soriano, a kalai ki‘i pohaku, or stone carver, and unveiling of the newly refurbished rooms by top island interior designers.

Set the date aside as Dr. Seuss comes to Waimea for “Free Movie Night” on Friday, June 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Waimea historic Church Row Park. Keiki of all ages will find themselves sitting on the edge of their seats as an imaginative elephant named Horton, played by Jim Carrey, discovers an entire family of microscopic creatures living on a tiny dust speck named Whoville in “Horton hears a Who.”
The challenge of keeping these creatures happy and healthy begins to turn sour as their clover home falls into 3 million clovers. Will Whoville survive the caldron of boiling oil? Will Horton forgive the villainess Sour Kangaroo, played by Carol Burnett? Will the tiny residents of Whoville make it to a safe haven? This box office success is the third Dr. Seuss feature film adaptation and includes a music soundtrack of 34 catchy tunes, including the theme song “Can’t Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedway.
This is New Hope Waimea’s now-monthly movie night. Families are encouraged to bring folding chairs, blankets, dinner and even the family pup. If the weather turns, the movie will move into the New Hope Waimea Sanctuary. Free popcorn, bottled water and hot cocoa will be served. For more information call 885-5510.
